Relocating Your Pets to Europe
At Ferndale Kennels, we understand the importance of a seamless pet relocation experience, especially when it comes to pet relocation to Europe and moving across various countries within the continent. The European Union (E.U.) comprises 28 member countries, including popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Greece, and many more. From the romantic streets of Paris to the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany, Europe has something for everyone. With our expertise in international pet relocation, we can assist you in making your furry friends’ journey to Europe safe, comfortable, and stress-free.
Essential Requirements for Pet Travel to Europe
When travelling to Europe, pets require specific travel documentation, including an EU health certificate, microchipping, and vaccination.
Microchip
Every pet must be identified with a microchip, as no other identification method is acceptable. This rule is important when relocating your pets to Europe. The microchip needs to meet ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO Standard 11785. Most European countries also accept AVID-9 and AVID-10 in addition to ISO. You must know that the microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccine is given.
Rabies Vaccination and Certificate
All pets must have an original rabies certificate issued by a certified veterinarian. The rabies vaccine must be given at least 21 days before the final health examination. It is recommended that pets also receive full vaccinations:
Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (DHLPP), and Bordetella.
Cats: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).
These vaccinations should be given at least two weeks before travelling to Europe.
E.U. Health Certificate
Your pet relocation specialist or qualified veterinarian will provide this certificate. It is the standard health certificate that your veterinarian must complete and sign the certificate(in blue). This certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue by the official veterinarian until the checks at the E.U. entry point.
This certificate is valid for four months from the issue date or until the rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first, for further travel within the E.U.
Depending on the specific destination country and the type of pet, additional treatments for internal parasites may be necessary. Rest assured, our team will guide you through the necessary documentation and vet appointments to ensure compliance with all E.U. regulations so that your pet has a smooth ride without any hiccups.
Organising a Pet Relocation to Europe
Planning a pet relocation to Europe involves thorough preparation, dedicated time, and extensive research. To facilitate a smooth transition, it’s important to adhere to certain guidelines. There’s a five-day rule that allows you to travel within the same timeframe as your pet, qualifying the move as a non-commercial pet shipment and enabling the approval of the relocation.
This means that you must arrange your vet trips, vaccinations and health form ready for your pet to travel within 5 days of your flight. Planning is key when transporting a pet.
Crate Training Your Pet Ready for Departure to Europe
As you contemplate a move to Europe with your pets, we highly recommend reaching out to us for initial advice. Consulting your vet to assess your pet’s health and ensure their readiness is also a crucial step when transporting your pet to European countries. Our team will also assist you in preparing your pets for travel in crates by helping you with effective crate training techniques.
Creating a positive association with a travel crate will help your pet to settle, feel safe and be less stressed during their flight. The crate encloses your pet and gives them a safe space to protect and relax, just like a bedroom. Despite being closed in, they will actually feel more comfortable and at ease in there.
Our helpful team will give you training tips and tricks on the lead up to your departure to ensure your pet is comfortable with the crate and sees it as a positive experience.
